The sale of hybrid cars has seen tremendous growth over the last few years – particularly as they are quickly improving in performance, style and are much more affordable than they once were.
Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius has been one of the most successful and popular hybrid cars ever released. The first Toyota Prius was released in 1997 as a compact sedan – but has now been developed into a mid-size hatchback. It was the first ever hybrid car released and by 2001 it was sold around the world.
Currently, the Toyota Prius is sold in 70 different countries and regions including the USA, Japan and Australia. In 2008, Prius sales reached the 1 million mark and by 2010 they had sold over 2 million Prius cars around the world.
The Toyota Prius is rated as one of the cleanest vehicles sold in the USA – as rated by the EPA and California Air Resources Board.
Lexus LS Hybrid
The Lexus LS hybrid has been a popular choice for car buyers as it has filled the gap left for a luxury hybrid car. While still offering the luxurious extras that Lexus owners look for, it still has the benefits of a hybrid car.
Lexus has several hybrid cars on the market, however the LS has been their best seller. It is a full-size luxury sedan – a hybrid version of their popular standard version. It was first released in 2006 at the North American International Auto Show – and was the first V8-powered full-hybrid vehicle.
Honda Civic Hybrid
The Honda Civic hybrid is the hybrid version of one of their most popular models – the Civic. First released in 2001 in Japan, the Honda Civic hybrid was first introduced into the USA in spring 2002. The car was the first to be certified as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emissions Vehicle by the California Air Resources Board.
The Honda Civic hybrid is the second best selling hybrid car in the USA and by 2009 had seen sales of over 255,000 in the United States alone. It has won numerous awards around the world including the International Engine of the Year for three years running and ranked within the top ten greenest vehicles in the USA by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy.
Ford Escape Hybrid
The Ford Escape hybrid was the first ever hybrid SUV to be released – additionally it was the first hybrid vehicle designed and built by an American car company. First put on sale in 2004, the Ford Escape hybrid has become one of the most popular hybrid cars on the market today – in its first year it made and sold over 17,000. The Ford Escape is also now available as a plug-in hybrid.
One of the key selling points of the Ford Escape hybrid is that it is 70 percent more efficient than the standard Ford Escape non-hybrid. The fuel economy of the Ford Escape hybrid is 34 miles per US gallon in metropolitan areas and 31 miles per US gallon on highways.
Chevrolet Volt
The Chevrolet Volt is one of the newest hybrid vehicles to come onto the market in the USA. First released in December 2010, the Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric car that is labelled as one of the most fuel efficient vehicles currently on sale in the United States.
Sales of the Chevrolet Volt have been very good and it has gone on sale in numerous countries around the world. Before the car was released, Chevrolet expected to manufacture 30,000 cars for 2012, but strong sales figures have seen that figure exceeding 45,000. In 2011, 25,000 Chevrolet Volt hybrid cars have already been manufactured.
The Chevrolet Volt isn’t yet available for purchase in all states – currently only California, Washington DC, Michigan, Texas, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut; the cars will be rolled-out to all states by mid-2012.
